The Georgia-Russia Submarine Cable System was established in 1999 creating the first Fibre Optical Gateway between Europe and the Caucasus region in the CIS and onwards to Iran, Central Asia and East Asia.

The Georgia-Russia Submarine Cable System is initially equipped with a STM-16 SDH transmission system, supplied by Alcatel Submarine Networks. The System is jointly owned and operated by Rostelecom, Russia, FOPTNET, Georgia and DanTelco, Denmark.

Operators may either lease large capacity in the Georgia-Russia Submarine Cable System or obtain Indefeasible Right of Use (IRU) for the lifetime of the System. Available capacity from minimum one E1 (2 Mbit/sec).
